Safety Codes Officer (contract – Until October 2012)
Name of Local Authority: Rocky View County
Location: Calgary, Alberta

Reporting to the Building and Compliance Manager, the Safety Codes Officer (SCO) is responsible to monitor building construction within the County to ensure that a minimum standard is met and enforce various codes and bylaws.

Key Accountabilities:      

  • Monitors compliance with the Safety Codes Act of Alberta and upholds the approved municipal land use bylaws.
  • Identify building deficiencies and/or infractions and take appropriate action for the correction of plans, construction of buildings or installation of services within buildings.
  • Enforce the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Code, Building Permit Bylaw and conditions of permit.
  • Gather evidence and prepare files for possible prosecution, attend court and Safety Codes Council hearings and give evidence as required.
  •  Develop working relationships with industry professionals to include: trades people, contractors, manufacturers, vendors and customers.
  • Function as a liaison with all levels of the Planning and Community Services Department, as well as other departments to increase effective communication and expedite resolution of concerns, questions and issues.

·                     All other duties as assigned. 

Key Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Possess a Journeyman Carpenter certificate or another trade certificate covered by the Alberta Building Code; or be a graduate of a minimum two-year architectural, building, construction, civil, or mechanical diploma program; or hold a degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering or Architecture with relevant experience or equivalent.
  • Group A – Level 1 Building Certification (minimum) through the Safety Codes Council of Alberta.
  • Previous HVAC design or consulting experience an asset.
  • Microsoft Office Suite experience.
  • Demonstrate superior customer service and a “can do” attitude.
  • Display strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Possess excellent attention to detail, organizational, prioritizing and time management skills.
